Role Overview
An engineering role within the Operations team, the role is to continually develop efficient manufacturing processes through applying automation and lean and continuous improvement methodology, whilst targeting quality improvements, product cost reduction and applying Health & Safety best practices.
The role will also require designing and setting up new automation cells either in-house or via consultation with 3rd parties. All relevant documentation and training will need to be prepared and delivered to the relevant team members to ensure the continuous operation of automation systems.

Key Responsibilities
Identification of new opportunities for automation within the existing manufacturing process.
Designing new automation equipment or processes.
Simulating and testing these processes or equipment to ensure they function as desired.
Programming new automated components to the manufacturing process.
Developing and maintaining clear and accurate documentation of automation equipment or processes.
Provide training on automation systems operation, typically after implementing new processes or equipment or making changes to existing ones.
Troubleshoot automated processes or equipment when errors occur.
Support with, and make improvements to, a wide range of production techniques for automated machining and assembly of components, including CNC machining, component assembly, cleaning, and metrology.
Develop solutions for automated manufacturing of components across the machine shop and assembly using standardised equipment and production methods wherever possible.
Design automation work cells for handling, inspection and assembly of components within manufacturing processes using a variety of robotics, vision and other automated systems.
Create and test programs for automation cells using PLC's and other native programming languages.
Work in cross-functional team environment, to develop control specifications and training documentation for the Production Engineering department.
Provide detailed analysis and testing of existing and new engineering solutions and components.
Support the commissioning of new automation elements.
Set project target dates and drive projects to ensure timely and effective delivery.
Assist the production team with their day-to-day production requirements by providing them with technical assistance and problem-solving solutions.
Identify defective processes that require a cross-functional team to review. Organise and lead RCAs to get to the root cause of an issue. Implement corrective actions to provide swift and permanent resolutions.
Maintain and apply lean principles to the automation environment.
Provide detailed manufacturing standard operating procedures.
Monitor production output through utilisation, OEE and machine uptime reports. Analyse data and trends to implement improvement actions to work towards 'world-class' productivity.
Co-ordinate project teams when appropriate to ensure the related small team of engineers efficiently delivers the project workload.
Check, verify, and sign off work completed by other team members as appropriate, providing mentorship if required.
Identify new machinery and equipment requirements by assessing the needs of the business and researching alternative options and providers. Prepare CAPEX requests and work with management & finance to submit robust proposals for approval.

Competencies for Success
Qualified to HNC level or actively working towards completion of a similar Mechanical, Electrical or Automation Engineering qualification with demonstrable experience working in an engineering-based role.
Possess a sound understanding of modern automation systems.
Able to demonstrate a thorough understanding and experience of quality, safety, maintenance, and automation systems.
Demonstrable experience in designing and developing new automation solutions.
Able to understand H&S requirements relating to automation systems.
Able to build strong relationships and gain the respect of both internal and external customers.
Able to demonstrate a positive attitude and work calmly under pressure.
Excellent communication skills.
Flexible with the ability to work to deadlines and the determination to see a job through to a satisfactory conclusion.
PC Literate, specifically in PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Project, and Excel
Excellent organisational and planning skills.
Good strong team player with the ability to influence others.

Desirable Competencies for Success
Demonstrate ability to evaluate processes through capability studies and equipment reviews.
Able to design jigs and fixtures using CAD (preferably 3D).
Demonstrable experience in the use of Continuous Improvement tools and techniques e.g., VSM, SMED, TPM, Kaizen, 5S, Error proofing etc.
Conversant with Design for manufacture (DFM), Lean Manufacture Value Analysis and Value Engineering (VAVE)
Articulate presenter and communicator both written and verbal.
